To this end in October 1949 property on Drake Street next to theadvertising office formerly occupied by Hamer House Chambers wasbought. The property had been empty since a major fire in January1940. Preliminary drawings for a new building were prepared but in thepost-war rebuilding period the company did not expect to get abuilding licence and the plans were put on ice. During the delay the directors of G and A N Scott becameconcerned about the increasing deterioriation of the Hamer Housebuilding which was by now ramshackle and potentially dangerous. As a result of this more detailed plans were prepared byarchitect Frank Bradley of Bolton in early 1952 and submitted tothe Board of Trade. Even then it was not until May 1953 that they obtainedpermission to build. Moving fast Messrs Hepworth of Ainsworth Street Rochdale werecommissioned to demolish the building and soon after the site wastaken over by Messrs R and T Howarth who had built the GreenwoodStreet offices more than a quarter of a century before… As a result of this more detailed plans were prepared byarchitect Frank Bradley of Bolton in early 1952 and submitted tothe Board of Trade. Rochdale’s own singing superstar Gracie Fields laid thefoundation stone in October 1954 for what was believed to be thefirst new building to be erected in the centre of town since theoutbreak of the Second World War. Work on the plush new offices were completed in time for theObserver’s centenary celebrations in 1956. The new-look modern façade was in marked contrast to the oldoffice which nestled alongside it – still adorned by the oldclock. But the days of the old building were numbered and in 1960having stood for 90 years it was demolished to make way for alarge new printing press.
