SANity for the small end
Australian IT – Feb 28, 2006
“We wanted quality – we didn’t want to go with a cheap and nasty basic system that was only going to last us 18 months. We wanted a good partner that would support us and a system that was scalable. Pacific Hydro is one of many mid-sized companies that have become a battleground for storage technology companies as plummeting hardware costs make products such as SANs affordable. Technology suppliers such as Sun IBM EMC HDS and Hewlett-Packard have leapt at the opportunity to sell into this new market. Most of these companies have increased their small and medium business sales and marketing programs in the past 12 months. In their race to the bottom suppliers risk missing out on profits that this new market promises. Falling prices may lead to an overall decline in revenue in the storage market for companies with fewer than 500 employees… Heers says the adoption of storage technology in smaller businesses is also helped by the fact that more of them now have employees who understand networking. Srinivasan says Sun has also noted growing interest from small and medium business in the back-up elements of storage systems. Increasingly he says small-medium businesses are moving from individual tape drives to proper backup libraries. Shipments to this sector have doubled in the past 12 months. module-content –>.

He said he is emboldened by the growth of high-tech companies and government contracting in the area. "The tenant will likely be in the Washington D. area because it is one of the centers of the telecom industry and because of the ever-demanding needs of the federal government" Coakley said… After a slow start in occupying office space the office park has been buoyed recently by the FBI’s move of 300 employees from Tysons Corner to a new building at Innovation. Local officials said Cokomo’s data center which will create about 60 new jobs is in line with the county’s goals. "We support the project they are moving in" said Jason Grant communications manager for the county’s Department of Economic Development. "For data centers from an infrastructure standpoint Prince William County makes sense.
