Instead they are pursuing a more subtle approach that I call personal playgrounds. Personal playgrounds have every service you’d ever want: search e-mail instant messaging voice chat maps news photo sharing music video blogging file storage and of course shopping. You wouldn’t be forbidden to leave but each company hopes to build a virtual paradise so alluring you’d never want to go elsewhere. Several small developments recently taken together show how fast the Internet Big Three are moving to build these playgrounds. Google acquired a four-person Portola Valley company called Upstartle that offers Writely a free online word processor. It’s a sign that Google intends to add free online word processing to its playground challenging Microsoft’s Word. It’s not certain if or when Google will introduce GDrive but certainly it shows how the Mountain View company is thinking. Microsoft meanwhile rolled out a beta version of its Windows Live Search service that goes after Google’s leading position in online search.
