The DCI recommends the creation of a d-cinema distribution master (DCDM) that would in turn be used to assemble a d-cinema package (DCP) for distribution to theaters. “If you want to be in postproduction supporting the release of digital-cinema packages you’ve got to get ready for this” Universal Studios senior vp technology Jerry Pierce says. “Most studios are testing out companies that are supplying these services already deciding how best to build that process-flow and will be making decisions in the coming months. Those that are seriously interested in creating DCPs are already creating initial versions of these packages. A DCDM is a collection of uncompressed files of a movie with characteristics including an X’Y'Z’ color space and 2K or 4K image resolution. Per the DCI specs the creation of a DCP from a DCDM involves encoding a feature using JPEG 2000 compression encrypting it for security and packaging it for distribution; that work could occur at a post house after mastering or be offered by other types of businesses including DVD-authoring facilities. Wendy Aylsworth vp technology at Warner Bros… Technical Operations and chairman of the DC28 committee believes that it makes good sense for DI sites to at least possess the ability to encode. She notes that a DCDM of a movie in 2K could contain more than 2 terabytes of data while a movie in 4K — which actually involves four times as much data as 2K — could exceed 8 terabytes. “It’s impractical to be moving files that could exceed 8 terabytes so post houses need to take on compression. and maybe leave encryption and wrapping to a distribution facility” Aylsworth says. The technology and work flows needed to deliver the DCI-recommended compression scheme and color space are not yet fully developed so some leading post houses have developed proprietary methods.

Home owners make market in green power

“There’s a lot to be gained from harnessing passive solar potential and using the sun to heat our water and our homes. New homes in most Australian states must now be fitted with some form of solar hot water technology while – in addition to RECs – there are state-based price discount incentives for someone looking to install a heater in an older property. Most systems made by companies such as Australia’s Solco Edwards or Beasley Hot Water Solutions and Rheem Manufacturing Company of the United States use unobtrusive solar roof tubes or panels linked directly to hot water storage tanks. Peter Meloy of New South Wales first fitted his roof with solar tubes which garner the sun’s rays to meet all of his hot water needs and has since moved up to a more advanced photo-voltaic system that on sunny days can help him generate a surplus of electricity that he sell back to the grid. “I never expect to pay for power again. Photo-voltaics are more expensive so they’re not for everyone but it’s a talking point when you can say to friends that you actually sell electricity back into the grid” said Meloy. But enthusiasm from home owners dreaming of self-sufficiency has not been matched by the power industry which remains deeply tied to dirtier – but cheaper – coal-fired plants to generate more than 80 percent of Australia’s electricity… “There’s a lot to be gained from harnessing passive solar potential and using the sun to heat our water and our homes.
