The MiniPC uses Intel Pentium M or Celeron M processors for quieter operation and better power consumption. This is the only “pared” down component inside this computer when compared to a full-sized desktop. Mice and keyboards Moving on, there was no shortage of companies parading keyboards and mice in all manner of sizes, shapes and colours. But in terms of new technologies, only A4 Tech seemed to have put something innovative inside its mice its GLaser mice are able to work on any surface including shiny ones, which has always been the Achilles heel of optical mice. It is so good that the GLaser, which is supposed to stand for “greater than laser,” even works on transparent glass. It achieves this by using a dual focus lens, according to A4 Tech. Expect a slew of these rodents in a few months, as A4 Tech is preparing to release no less than 10 varieties… We sure hope we get our hands on one before we are hit by another round of haze. Same tune We were quite disappointed that none of the MP3 players showcased looked like it could take on Apple’s dominant iPod. Sure, they were cuter, more colourful, and featured large storage capacities but somehow they still lacked the coolness that only an iPod exudes. And it looks like everyone wants in as even Kingston, better known for its RAM modules, showcased its media player that plays video, music and even games. The K-PEX (Kingston Portable Entertainment eXperience) has a 2in screen capable of displaying 200 x 176pixels. The player, which comes in 1GB and 2GB storage capacities, practically plays all known video and audio formats, and has an SD card slot for additional storage space. Kingston will include two games with the device, but it is not clear if more games will be made available by third-party companies.

UGS made the announcement today in conjunction with its annual industry analyst conference in New York. (See separate UGS announcements from today. ) “Using the latest versions of FactoryCAD and FactoryFLOW, companies can create virtual plants that are not only accurate in physical design, but also contain intelligence and a strong rules-based modeling approach via the use of ‘smart objects’ that represent plant resources,” said Al Hufstetler, vice president, Tecnomatix Marketing, UGS. “Factory designers can then optimize plant layouts based on material flow distances, frequency and costs. The resulting state-of-the-art digital factory represents a competitive advantage for progressive manufacturers.

html” >changing role of Cisco and the products it offers to its customers, which includes businesses large and small, telephone companies, cable operators and consumers. He said the company is moving beyond just providing the infrastructure and plumbing of Internet Protocol networks, and is instead moving toward offering customers a series of products that let them launch new communications services. “I’m proud to be a plumber,” he told reporters. “It’s been a good occupation. However, this plumbing is moving beyond transport. For the past several years, Cisco has been working to establish itself as more than a switching and router vendor, which today still accounts for the bulk of its revenue… Cisco has defined these new markets by calling them Advanced Technologies. And it selects them based on their potential to generate $1 billion in annual revenue within five to seven years. Some that are already named include digital video, the digital home, security, optical networking, storage area networking, wireless, hosted small business and IP telephony. Most of the Advanced Technologies so far have been winners, with security and IP telephony already generating $1 billion in revenue yearly. Optical networking is the only advanced technology that Chambers and other Cisco executives admit has been a disappointment. But Chambers said that too much success might not be a good thing as Cisco makes the transition into new markets. “I think our success rates in the Advanced Technologies (have) been too high,” he said.

Data compromise and exposure hurts a company?s brand leaving others wondering if they?ll be next and how they can prevent such an event from happening in the first place. To provide protection from these attacks, most companies have secured their systems and network from outsiders, implementing perimeter-based security strategies with firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs) to ensure that external users without proper authorization cannot access sensitive data. However, companies are now looking beyond traditional perimeter-based security methods to secure data and are focusing on securing the data residing on the storage within their organizations (data at rest) and data moving between their systems on the network and storage devices (data in flight). This is known as storage security. Typically, storage security includes three components:

Authentication

Access control

Encryption
