This time, it’s IBM leading the way in the Aperi consortium against a new one announced June 22 at Storage World Conference 2006 in Long Beach–one that still needs a name but features five heavyweight competitors in EMC, Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Hitachi Data Systems and Symantec. Unlike Aperi, the five companies are working with established standards bodies to advance a common standard API (application programming interface) for storage customers. The companies, collectively representing more than half the worldwide market share for enterprise storage management software, will work together to ensure that the SNIA’s (Storage Networking Industry Association) SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative specification) becomes a common, widely used industry standard.

I know we’re not alone!Annie Groer and Jura Koncius: This is very true! And you have all these giant gift boxes bearing amazing gifts and no place to put them. If your in-laws or parents live in the area, you can do what a lot of newly weds do. Go to the Storage Unit of Mom and Dad. No use paying for a storage space elsewhere. The main thing to do, is start using some of this stuff so you can ditch the boxes and packing material – which is seven or eight times the size of the item. Use checks you got for gifts to maybe buy storage cabinets. _______________________Bad Kitty! in New Haven Conn: I moved from DC, where I had beautiful hardwood floors, to CT, where i have ugly wall to wall carpeting… You sound like a VERY patient teacher. _______________________Re: Internet Bed Companies: I didn’t use any of the companies listed — and didn’t buy a trundle — but when I was looking for a comtemporary sofa that folded into an extra bed I did my homework online. I was a little nervous ordering something I hadn’t seen before, but we were very pleased.

TiVo has new content services for the Series2 DT and its other DVRs, too. The company recently introduced TiVoCast, which delivers video clips from Web sites such as The New York Times and the NBA to your TV over broadband. On the horizon is KidZone, a password-protected service that allows TiVo customers to designate which recordings children can view from the DVR. Guru Guides, scheduled for launch later this year, taps the knowledge of entertainment experts to identify the best programs in different categories. TiVo is also working with Verizon Wireless on technology that would allow users to schedule recordings from their cell phones. It’s tempting to wait for TiVo’s Series3 HD DVR, which should ship later this year and is supposed to offer support for HDTV and two one-way CableCards.

‘s oft-vilified ad-targeting technology. On July 1, Claria will stop running ads generated by its pioneering but highly criticized “adware” programs that monitor where people surf. Instead, the company will launch PersonalWeb, which generates customized Web portals on the fly so that a user who just checked baseball scores and movie show times might get a page pulling top items from ESPN and Moviefone. Targeted banner ads or sponsored links, rather than pop-ups, would be shown. “We’ve proven it (targeting) works for advertising, and we are highly confident it will work for content,” said Scott Eagle, the company’s executive vice president. Claria is currently testing PersonalWeb with about 100,000 people, Eagle said, and is trying to persuade dozens of Web site.
