Day Laborer Charged in Killing of Worker Over Job Dispute
Washington Post – Sep 20, 2006
"It’s pretty much slower than I’ve ever seen," said Gladys Gutridge, who works at Regency Moving and Storage Inc. and has been in the business 25 years. Joe Moholland, who owns a moving company nearby, said the busy moving season typically doesn’t slow down until October, but for the past month and a half, jobs have been scant and that the laborers, who typically earn $200 to $300 a day, are feeling the brunt of it, he said. "It really affects them," Moholland said. "It’s probably the worst I’ve seen, and I’ve been with this business 12 years. "Jeff Corbin, manager of the Lakeridge auto repair shop across the street from the shooting, said he didn’t know Harris or Jenkins by name but that if he saw them, he’s sure he’d recognize them. The men have become part of the landscape, with as many as 40 gathering at any one time, he said.

The problem with the American economy in my lifetime as I see it is that, while all the sometimes convenient, often absurd trappings of modern consumer life have become more affordable, the cost of fundamental necessities has consistently outstripped the rate of inflation, often to extreme degrees. So, while I can choose to let ever-cheaper gadgets pile up around my feet, I have no place to store them. I suspect that I am not alone is this regard, the booming self-storage business arguably being evidence of a larger trend. The increase in housing prices is an economic disaster that overshadows by factors of 10, or 100 or 1,000 any economic advantage created by lower consumer goods prices. How can any non-homeowner of average income ever recover economically from the cumulative run up that house prices have experienced since the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s? Housing always has been, but will become even more so, an important litmus test for determining who is thriving and who is not. – Tony TraversoI believe your article misses several important factors. One is the equity of the American economy… If I
owned and ran a business that made no money, I don’t get paid. If it is General Motors or United Airlines, the people hired to run the company get paid lots to drive it into the ground. The overclass knows that if they can convince
people they are doing better than the previous
generation, then people will feel good. The reality is, the overclass is not giving the other classes their fair share. – Brian CliseIt was interesting to read your article regarding how ‘inflated’ the CPI is when in reality costs of some items have fallen thanx to technology or cheap labor. However, may I also point that the CPI does not take into consideration the ‘price of a house’.
