THE STORAGE company that riled straphangers with its ads mocking the city’s boroughs outside Manhattan has agreed to pull its posters, though company officials insist they didn’t mean to offend anyone. “If anything, our posters are meant to poke fun at the excessive prices of self-storage in Manhattan, and certainly not as a cultural critique of the outer boroughs,” an executive at Public Storage wrote in response to a stern letter from City Councilman Eric Gioia (D-Queens) last week calling for the ads to be removed. The Glendale, Calif. -based company has been running print ads on the No. 7 train that declare: “Finally a good reason to leave Manhattan” and then list discounted rates for its facilities in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

The company said there was strong growth in all of its divisions and it expected further benefits from the acquisition of moving and storage group Beverly Smyth in July. Chief executive Ross Ivers said he was confident of further growth in the rest of the year, while the company was also looking for fresh acquisition opportunities.
