This represents a 39% premium to Shurgard’s closing stock price on Friday, July 29, 2005, the last day prior to when Public Storage publicly announced its proposal to acquire Shurgard. Upon closing, Shurgard’s shareholders will own approximately 23% of the outstanding shares of the combined company. (Big Yellow Group PLC, Safestore and Flexistore) ROADSIDE PROPERTY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TIGHT market as standalone retail units, trade counters, car dealerships and petrol stations vie for the relatively small number of prominent sites. It is hard to imagine that there is any space left for other property users. But three self-storage companies–Big Yellow Group, Safestore and Flexistore–are on the lookout for sites. And the race is on to grab them. Flexistore, has an advantage: the company picks up possessions from customers’ homes in a specially designed ‘vault’, before dropping them off at its storage depots, so it does not need to join the scrum for arterial routes.
