CBS News – Dec 4, 2006
‘s decision to halt development of a key drug and focused instead on another series of takeover deals. The Dow was up almost 106 points. Pfizer shares fell by about 12 percent after the company stopped the development of the cholesterol drug torcetrapib because of deaths and cardiovascular problems among people taking the drug during clinical trials. The stock was also downgraded by several Wall Street analysts on concern that Pfizer’s revenue growth will now weaken. The news was offset by several merger announcements that reinforced the belief that companies are optimistic about the economy and therefore are willing to take some risks. Leading them was Bank of New York Corp… said it will buy rival chip and storage systems maker Agere Systems Inc. for $4 billion in stock. The purchase price represents a 28 percent premium for Agere shareholders.

Seen as a barometer of the overall quality of
IT services, fast access to application and file data has become such a user
requirement in most enterprise organizations that even a few seconds’ delay
in opening a file or application can be enough to generate new calls into support. Thankfully, high-speed, high-availability networks and fast-moving networked
storage architectures tend to minimize the risk of excessive user access delays
for today’s corporate data center. Likewise, initiatives to consolidate and
centralize server and storage resources have resulted in not just better access
to files and applications, but also a better way for IT to centrally control,
monitor, secure and protect the data under its care. As data centers continue to mature in their adoption of best practices for
centralized, controlled data delivery within the walls of their corporate headquarters,
their efforts have begun to turn to the problem child of many IT environments:
The growing league of remote, geographically dispersed offices that now represent
the data center’s ever-widening “edge. ”

Problems at the Wild Frontier
In a recent Storage World Conference session on remote branch office challenges,
Taneja Group founder Arun Taneja gave some indication of the scope of the problem
now facing IT.

Is that the way you generally see the upside potential increasing? ABHI TALWALKAR: I am not going to comment on the specific numbers and so forth. Also in terms of Sony there is no Sony revenue whatsoever in the LSI revenue profile for 2006. I see the upside potential coming from combining our two companies that will allow us to deliver a much more broader product portfolio, as well as obviously drive further penetration in shared wallet growth within our customer base. SHEBLY SEYRAFI: But I think it is fair to say, Abhi, that your communication segment has not been as much of a growth segment as the other segments, say the consumer expectation in storage, etc. And LSI I’m sorry Agere has talked about higher growth rates there. Do you see your communication business now having better growth prospects? And if so, how much more do you see how that growth increases? ABHI TALWALKAR: Clearly as a combined company as we said earlier will be well positioned in various segments within networking, both communications in terms of external to enterprises in terms of public infrastructure and access, as well as all the interconnected networking within the enterprise. So I think the combination is positioned to drive new growth engines in that particular area on top of the growth that you alluded to that Agere is looking at next year.

Storage resource management means many things to many people, vendors and IT folks alike. In theory it covers everything from autodiscovering storage-area network devices to alerting and reporting on enterprisewide storage trends; from providing specific inventory control measures to supplying comprehensive management for the entire SAN; from enabling storage capacity management to assisting in information life-cycle management and storage-provisioning tasks. In this Clear Choice test we targeted products that cover most of these storage-management bases in a heterogeneous environment. Only HP and Symantec took up the gauntlet… Only HP and Symantec took up the gauntlet. Hitachi’s software runs only on its hardware, and company officials said they didn’t have a system small enough (less than 7U) to meet our lab criteria. EMC said it has a new version of its product coming out in early 2007 and may let us test that when it’s available. Commvault said its product has more of a focus on backup storage software. Brocade agreed to participate but then changed its mind and pulled out of the test before sending the product to our lab. The rest declined to participate.

Is storage technology a blessing or a curse? If we ask Nationwide about laptop storage technology the reply might be mixed. It was a blessing that enabled the user of the laptop computer stolen three months ago to work on the 11 million user account details stored on its hard drive. How very convenient. But it was a curse because one stolen laptop and three months later Nationwide is having to write 11 million letters to account holders explaining that their details are now in the possession of a thief. It? great having the ability to store so much data, but just the fact of storing it exposes you to risk.

: What is the process for deciding when and how to close down lanes for construction? The Newseum construction has caused enormous backups on Penn Ave. during morning rush hour as they close down lanes without signage; construction on 15th St. means that buses and cars are all frantically moving across multiple lanes, again at rush hour. I could go on and on. It seems that especially at rush hour the city should be working to keep more lanes open, but right now it appears that construction sites set their own rules… Gridlock: You could start by calling the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 202-727-1000. Here’s what’s supposed to happen next: After receiving a service request from the Citywide Call Center, a Department of Public Works investigator may post a warning notice on the vehicle, if it is abandoned, stating that the owner must remove it within the next 24 hours. Should the vehicle remain after 24 hours, DPW will dispatch a contract towing company to remove and tow it to the storage and auction facility. _______________________Fairfax, Va. : I ride the Blue Line every day; I am really tired of those four-car trains that Metro seems to think are appropriate for rush hour commutes. I think they forget why they are in business, and about customer service. I am continually packed in like a sardine, and they say the rider-ship does not justify larger trains.
