The ups and downs of biometrics, grid computing, VOIP
PC-Welt – Dec 5, 2006
“There are a lot of nuances related to grid computing that have to be taken into consideration. Moving away from a typical data center and computing architecture isn’t anything new for Burlington, which ditched its mainframes about 15 years ago in favor of symmetrical multiprocessing and Unix systems and adopted Linux in its stores in the early 2000s. The company is in the early stages of moving two data centers to grid, deploying it on more than a dozen 2- and 4-way IBM Linux boxes on a closed communications network with shared storage from Hitachi Data Systems and others. The grid system supports database software and management tools from longtime partner Oracle. The goal for Burlington, which Friedman described as a data-driven business, is 100% availability through smart allocation of computing resources. Friedman says some of the initial benefits of the system have to do with the Linux kernel maturing in areas such as better cache management and memory support. Other benefits have come from Oracle’s management system supporting dynamic allocation of storage (Burlington has about 100TB of active storage, not all being managed by the grid) and working with a growing roster of third-party products such as load balancers and application servers… “I counted at least 3 different open standard groups out there,” he said. Burlington is seeing big savings on hardware, using systems that cost in the thousands of dollars rather than hundreds of thousands. Storage at less than a penny a megabyte is hard to complain about either, Friedman said. The big cost now is in software, so extra attention to managing that is key in a grid environment, he said. Lying ahead is shifting applications to grid, which should pose additional challenges, Friedman said. VOIP believerAnother IT pro spoke of VOIP use at XL Global Services, which serves financial firm XL Capital. The speaker, who asked to remain nameless because he recently joined another company, said the network had been based on a mix of technologies from frame relay to ISDN to DSL as a result of various XL acquisitions.

Ariba deploys 3PAR Utility Storage
CTR – Dec 5, 2006
Ariba also reduced storage costs by using 3PAR Dynamic Optimization to tailor RAID (redundant array of independent disks) service levels to various applications, 3PAR added. Ariba is also able to transition simply and non-disruptively from one configuration to another, while assuring that performance and storage efficiency are appropriately balanced, 3PAR added. Compared to Ariba?s previous storage environment, the company has dramatically reduced costs with 3PAR Utility Storage, according to Ariba of Sunnyvale, California. The simplicity of InServ has resulted in a significant reduction in storage administration effort, Ariba said. After deploying 3PAR Utility Storage, storage is no longer a bottleneck for Ariba, as the data is spread evenly across systems resources like disks, processors and loops, 3PAR said. Ariba has also boosted service levels through data recoverability. Using 3PAR Virtual Copy, which is a non-duplicative and reservation-less snapshot technology, Ariba is able to take snapshots of every database four times a day, and then retain those snapshots for a week, 3PAR said.

BT takes the battle to Sky with Premiership football deal
The Independent – Independent – Dec 5, 2006
However, a deal to offer consumers “on-demand” live Premier League football games and new-release films clearly puts it into competition with Sky and NTL, which battle against BT in the broadband sector. Competition could get even fiercer with Vodafone also set to offer its users BT Vision as part of a wider mobile and broadband package. Orange has also revealed that it will launch its internet-delivered TV service in the latter half of 2007, while Tiscali is in the process of integrating TV company Homechoice. Ian Livingston, head of BT’s retail arm, said there was a vast untapped market for “on-demand” content in the UK, which has 47 million TV sets not yet connected to pay-TV. “People want more choice but they don’t want the commitment of paying £30 to £40 per month to pay for it,” he said. He said that consumers want “choice and convenience” without paying to subscribe to content they do not want. BT said its broadband customers do not have to pay additional subscription charges to access new-release films, music concerts, live football matches and TV shows that they have missed over the past week… Consumers can watch 46 live Premier League games a year after BT signed a deal with the Irish pay-TV company Setanta. Around 50,000 consumers have already registered for BT Vision and the company expects to be connecting hundreds of thousands of users by the end of 2007. BT will spend more than £100m rolling out the BT Vision service next year as it will absorb the near-£200 cost of providing the set-top box, which includes up to 80 hours’ storage on a hard drive, to the consumer. But customers will face set-up costs including a £60 fee to install the equipment. A self-installation version will be available next year. A Sky spokesman said: “When it comes to content, there is no contest between Sky and BT. ” BT said it expects to continue to sign content deals before its mass-market launch of BT Vision next summer.

Automakers toss â’kitchen sinkâ’ at fuel issue
MSNBC – Dec 5, 2006
GM, the world?s largest automaker, said Wednesday it plans to make a plug-in electric hybrid version of the Saturn Vue Green Line SUV, running on both gas and a battery that is charged while the vehicle is in motion and can be recharged from an electrical outlet, extending its range. But in a speech opening the Los Angeles show, GM?s Chairman Rick Wagoner said vehicles running on fuel-cell technology as well as E85 ? a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline ? are part of the automaker?s plan to cut its dependence on foreign oil. GM?s range of alternative fuel products demonstrate that the company ?is serious about fuel economy and minimizing the environmental impact of our vehicles,? said Troy Clarke, president of GM?s North American operations… Incentives may speed up the process of change. The Energy Department is helping to pay for demonstration projects to help build vehicles that run on hydrogen, while car companies are receiving tax credits for bringing new products to market. Like GM, Ford is moving ahead with a wide range of alternative fuels. This week Ford is showing a hydrogen-fueled Explorer sport utility vehicle, a prototype built for the Department of Energy that can travel farther than any other fuel-cell vehicle — up to 350 miles on one fill-up — and also a hybrid version of the Escape SUV.   Related coverageGM’s Wagoner pledges to deliver more hybridsNearly half of Ford’s hourly workers taking buyoutsOther automakers are showing off their environmentally friendly options, most notably BMW, which Wednesday unveiled its new Hydrogen 7, powered by a 12-cylinder combustion engine that it calls the world?s first ?hydrogen-powered performance sedan. ?The Hydrogen 7 has an internal combustion engine that can operate on either hydrogen or gasoline. The innovative sedan, which will be made in limited numbers and sold in 2007, is the first production vehicle powered by hydrogen running through combustion engine to be brought to market.
