Hybrid proving itself in data storage
OCRegister – Dec 12, 2006
Competition is stiff because declining prices for flash memory are creating new markets, “potentially a huge opportunity in notebook and desktop computers,” in addition to their continued expansion into small portable devices, Niebel says. EARLY IDEA SiliconSystems co-founders Hajeck and David Merry, who is chief technical officer, dreamed up the idea of the SiliconDrive years before it was feasible, Hajeck recalls. Both men had years of experience in data storage companies and knew that many large business customers put a high premium on reliability beyond what disk drives could deliver, primarily because of the drives’ sensitive read-write arms and fast-spinning disks. Flash memory has the advantage of functioning without moving parts, but it has reliability problems of its own, which Hajeck and Merry needed to overcome to make flash memory appealing to business customers. “If I lose one bit (of data) in a 2-gigabyte file in my digital camera, I won’t notice,” Hajeck says. “But a cellular network’s base station isn’t a digital camera. If I lose one bit in a log file or an event file, a call won’t go through… EARLY IDEA SiliconSystems co-founders Hajeck and David Merry, who is chief technical officer, dreamed up the idea of the SiliconDrive years before it was feasible, Hajeck recalls. Xerox Researchers Create Breakthrough Parallel Printer Architecture
Al-Bawaba – Dec 12, 2006
, and at its Palo Alto Research Center, delivers the power of two printers with the simplicity of one. Similar to the way parallel architectures for data storage and processors have revolutionized the IT industry, this new parallel printer design will deliver unsurpassed productivity and reliability to the digital printing industry… Synchronization capabilities that enable the dual engines to be “in tune” with each other and allow them to essentially act as one. Just as the coordination of the pistons in an automobile engine, the relative motion of images in each engine must be precisely controlled but in this case without any mechanical connection between them. So, in order to keep the paper moving through the tandem engines at exactly matched speeds, a smart “self-aware” technology is used to measure each engine’s speed over 1,000 times per second and to control the difference. The result: Both engines work as one, providing the customer with the productivity and speed of a dual-engine printer. Image quality is consistently monitored by an “invisible eye” within each machine. This measures the image density, or “blackness,” up to twice per second. It automatically adjusts the power of the laser on each of the two printing engines, ensuring the pages printed on each engine match perfectly.

The merging of the traditional IT professional with security
Computerworld – Dec 12, 2006
While I agree with this premise of separation of duties of network people and security people, it made me think along another tangent (surprise, surprise). So many people are talking about security and network convergence now. Security is moving more and more into the edge (the edge is still there people!). UTM’s and NAC are all the rage. Non-security companies are snapping up small security companies (EMC, Citrix, etc. ) The stuff is coming together, and security is the central focus of it all.

Under the terms of the definitive agreement announced November 8, 2006, Network Appliance acquired Topio for approximately USD 160 million in an all-cash transaction. According to the statement by the company, NetApp intends to add heterogeneous replication capabilities to its disk-to-disk backup products, including the NearStore Virtual Tape Library (VTL), Open Systems SnapVault for remote office backup and SnapVault for NetBackup, a product jointly engineered with Symantec. “We see three primary uses for this, test and development environments, disaster recovery, and data migration,” said Patrick Rogers, VP of products and partners at NetApp. According to Tony Asaro, analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group, the acquisition will be a boon to customers looking to perform heterogeneous remote mirroring, “which a lot of people have been pushing for,” he said. Users can now mirror data from non-NetApp storage to a NetApp box and then use NetApp’s FlexClone to create writeable snapshots, he said, rather than copying full volumes.
