As previously announced, the Company acquired twelve self-storage facilities during the quarter for a total cost of $42. David Rogers, the Company’s Chief Financial Officer, said, “We had a slow January and February with regard to both rentals and acquisitions, but we recovered on both fronts in March. But what are the rules for self-storage facilities and what is there to stop terrorists and other criminals from storing explosives, drugs and guns in such places?In 1999 there were only 100 self-storage depots in the UK. Now there are about 600. Most reputable depots ask clients to sign a form, part of which is a disclaimer in which the person waives their rights if they have stored anything flammable or illegal. A spokesman for Access Self-Storage said they would not be commenting on Operation Crevice or the wider issue of security but a source said Access had very tight procedures and were one of the first companies to introduce a “no cash” policy.

Also convicted were Anthony Garcia, 25; Waheed Mahmud, 35; and Salahuddin Amin, 32. Much of the evidence was compiled as part of a massive surveillance undertaken when employees at a self-storage company in west London telephoned police about ammonium nitrate that was being stored there. Authorities secretly replaced the fertilizer with a substance like cat litter and set up a hidden camera at the rental unit and wiretaps at the homes of the suspects.
