And six months of pent-up anticipation comes to a head thismorning, Australian time. Apple shops and AT&T outlets acrossthe US are opening their doors and ushering in the long lines ofApple fans, early adopters and opportunists who have queued upoutside – some since Monday morning. Thousands will walk outclutching a package containing either a $US499 model with fourgigabytes of memory or a $US599 model with an eight-gigabytestorage capacity. As they emerge – especially those from the larger Apple shopsaround the US – it’ll be like hitting the red carpet at the Oscars. Scores of ordinary folk will find fleeting fame for no other reasonthan they bought a mobile phone. They will be mobbed by reporters,cameramen and photographers and asked: “How does it feel to own aniPhone?”All this for a 135-gram mobile phone that is also a fullyfunctional iPod and a computer with which you can surf the web andread and write emails. But it’s not just a three-in-one mobilephone…
He predicts the iPhone willhave a long-term effect on the entire phone industry and probablyeven the computer industry. Apple expects its new gadget will do for the mobiles what theiPod did for digital music players. By the end of next year, theCalifornian company that kicked off the personal computerrevolution in the mid-’70s aims to have 1 per cent of a globalmobile phone market, which is heading towards the 1 billion mark. That’s a sales target of 10 million in 18 months, by which time itshould also be available in Europe, Asia and Australia. There is, admits Kahney, an element of manipulation behind thehype. “It’s the same modus operandi they’ve been using since thedays of the Mac [computer], which is to start off with a big mediaevent to create a buzz, create news coverage and then feed outinformation until the product hits the road,” he said in aninterview from his home in San Francisco. “It’s designed to gettongues wagging.
