Israeli company develops new storage format that holds 1 terabyte on a single disc Aug. 29 – Israeli optical storage technology comany, Mempile, has developed a new storage format, the TeraDisc, which the company claims can hold more information than any other disc-based format. Mempile, founded in May 2000, boasts that the TeraDisc, which is the same size as standard DVDs or CDs, has capacity exceeding 1000 GB on a single, removable disc, and addresses today’s explosion in multi-media content and growing demands for high capacity archiving at home and work. The discs, which have a lifespan of 50 years, are made possible by using 200 5GB layers, with each layer only five microns apart. They could be in the stores within two to three years. How much data could you expect to store on these discs? A 1 tera-byte disc could hold 212 DVD-quality movies, 250,000 MP3 files, and 1,000,000 large Word documents.

Natural Gas and PipelineDuring the first half of 2007, the construction of major oil and gas pipelines proceeded smoothly. The capacity expansion projects of the West-East Gas Pipeline was smoothly conducted as planned. The Jintan gas storage facilities were filled up and put into operation. Construction of the Lanzhou-Yinchuan gas pipeline, which connects the Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Pipeline, was completed and successfully put into trial operation in late July. Currently the Company has sucessfully established a gas supply network in its four key natural gas fields. In addition, the Beijing Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Dispatching Center commenced its operation. During the first half of 2007, the Natural Gas and Pipeline segment recorded an operating profit of RMB6…
6% compared to the same period of 2006. The Natural Gas and Pipeline segment has become the Company’s new growth point and is poised to grow significantly. Moving forward, the Company plans to build a number of key oil and gas pipelines which include the Second West-East Gas Pipeline and the Lanzhou-Zhengzhou-Changsha product oil pipeline. The Company will further enhance its capacity to strengthen its supply capabilities and basis of future development. Overseas BusinessDuring the first half of 2007, the Company made steady growth in overseas business. As of 30 June 2007, the Company’s overseas net oil and gas production amounted to 29 million barrels of oil equivalent, representing an increase of 6. 6% from the same period of 2006.

It is pertinent to mention here that Hafiz Abdul Basit had been in illegal confinement since January 2004, and authorities denied his whereabouts persistently. Hats off to the independent judiciary, especially to the chief justice of Pakistan who made the authorities produce these persons and, thereafter, released them. We cannot imagine the agonies and miseries of the families who have been deprived of company of their loved ones without knowing whether they are alive or dead. These persons were deprived of their liberty without lawful authority on flimsy reasons or personal grudge of personnel of intelligence agencies. It is still to determine that how these persons would be compensated?It is a settled principle of law that even chief executive of the country is not above law, whereas agencies and their personnel are trying to negate this long lasting principle. This callous behaviour is not appreciated in civilised society and will bring a bad name to our country…
