And as with full disk encryption on laptops, the solution chosen should encrypt data automatically with no user intervention, giving ease of use with control and enforceability. Data Leakage: Audit and Control of removable media Unfortunately, full-disk encryption is not a magic shield against all types of security threat to portable devices. The hard drive is only one storage medium in use on a typical laptop. This brings us to the second area for endpoint security: management and control of data leakage. Endpoint security should ensure that the organisation is able to avoid data leaks onto peripheral devices such as USB drives and portable storage media–such as mp3 players and digital cameras. The starting point for protection against leaks via these USB devices is to include them in the business acceptable usage policy (AUP) and to educate users on the importance of following policy–which will include the business risks of breaching policies. However, policies alone are.

(NEWS: ANALYSIS + TRENDS) –> COPYRIGHT 2008 PennWell Publishing Corp. Seanodes has entered the storage industry with a novel approach to creating high-performance virtual storage pools from the unused storage capacity found in application servers. The company’s software, called Exanodes, is based on a Shared Internal Storage architecture that reclaims existing storage resources to build a self-healing, self-organizing, storage infrastructure. Each node is capable of functioning as both an application and storage server, eliminating the need for dedicated storage servers. An Exanodes cluster can accommodate 128 nodes and interoperates with any block.

Solutions have mainly focused on file-level recovery and not application data like that created by Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft SQL Server. If the first line of defense in a disaster recovery solution is protecting the data, the second is undoubtedly protecting the application. Providing a real-time copy of the data and availability of the application associated with it, enables a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) significantly better than that provided by solutions like tape backup or CDP. CDP provides no provision for RTO and focuses solely on RPO, which is only half of the customer challenge. While true-CDP solutions have not gained widespread traction, the promise of CDP, despite its problems, thrives. It does so in the form known as near-CDP. Many traditional backup vendors have differentiated themselves from their competitors by integrating CDP.
