Amazon: We’re a Technology Company

Jassey expects demand for cloud services to grow, particularly now with the economy in trouble. “It eliminates up-front capital and lets you move faster and get to market quicker,” he said. For instance, when companies get ready to launch a new online service, they typically invest in new computer and storage capacity. “You have to guess, and it rarely turns out to be what you projected,” he said. In other words, you either buy more than you need or scramble to meet unexpected demand. Gens sees many companies moving to the cloud for the applications and services most often sought by business types, who are actually circumventing the IT department to get what they need. These include such business solutions as sales-force automation, productivity, and marketing campaign software. "The more pure IT stuff — infrastructure, infrastructure software, application development — those are tech buyers, so there are fewer potential customers," Gens says. Tech buyers are taking a hard look at such cloud services as Amazon’s EC2, which allows businesses to scale capacity dynamically by uploading virtual machines to Amazon’s servers. But other less glitzy areas are getting traction, too.

Self-storage site stirs flood fears
Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, IN
Herman & Kittle Properties Inc. wants to build the 82,310-square-foot storage complex to serve the city’s east side, said Tim Westerfield, land acquisition specialist for the company. The Indianapolis-based company is building another Infinite Self Storage location on Lima Road, just north of Wallen Road. The Stellhorn Road location will feature some climate-controlled and drive-up units. Westerfield said he wasn’t sure how much the project would cost or how many jobs would be created. Infinite Self Storage would create a buffer between nearby homes and the shopping center where Scott’s is located, Westerfield said. The complex will be fenced and landscaped to block neighbors’ views.
